Fortified & Dessert

Fortified and dessert wine — the category Australia does as well as anywhere and almost nobody talks about. Rutherglen muscat, Barossa and McLaren Vale tawny, and Penfolds' Grandfather and Great Grandfather rare tawnies.

These keep for months after opening, unlike table wine, so a bottle is not a commitment to finishing it in an evening. Serve slightly chilled.

  • South Australia

Wolf Blass Red Label Tawny 750ml

We stock it because it is number three in ALM's wine-other segment with 4.40% share, up from fourth last year. Tawny has a loyal and badly under-served audience.

  • Barossa Valley, South Australia

    Yalumba Antique Tawny 375ml

We stock it because a fortified wine is the one bottle on this shelf that is better a month after opening than a week after, and this is the least expensive way to find that out.

  • Rutherglen, Victoria

Morris of Rutherglen Old Premium Rare Muscat

We stock it because it is the single most distinctly Australian thing in the range: there is no equivalent made anywhere else, and most people who try it have never had anything like it.

  • New South Wales

    McWilliam's Royal Reserve Tawny

We stock it because it is number three in the state in its segment, and because it is the cheapest thing in this range that will still be good six months after it is opened - which is the whole point of a fortified wine and something no other bottle here can claim.

  • South Australia

    Penfolds Club Tawny

We stock it because it is number eight in the state in a segment nobody merchandises any more, and because the customer who buys it has usually been buying it for forty years and cannot find it.
