Whisky

Single malt and blended Scotch, Irish whiskey, Japanese whisky, and the Australian and Indian distillers now making some of the most interesting whisky in the world. Islay peat from Lagavulin and Laphroaig, Speyside from Aberlour and Glenfiddich, Suntory's Yamazaki and Hakushu, Lark from Tasmania and Starward from Melbourne, and Amrut, Rampur and Indri from India.

If you are starting out, a Speyside or an Irish whiskey is the gentler way in; Islay is the one people either love immediately or never. Every bottle lists its region, producer and ABV, so you can tell what you are getting before you buy.

To narrow it down, there are separate pages for Scotch whisky, Japanese whisky, single malt and bourbon and Tennessee whiskey.

Laphroaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

The most divisive bottle we sell, and deliberately so. Iodine, tar, seaweed and an antiseptic bite that people either fall for immediately or never make peace with. We stock the 10 because Laphroaig does not compromise to be liked, and a shop that only carried whisky everyone agrees on would be a duller shop. Try it before you commit to a bottle.

  • Hakushu, Yamanashi · Japan

Hakushu 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky

Hakushu is Suntory's forest distillery, and the 12 is the green one - cut grass, cucumber, a whisper of smoke that arrives late and leaves quickly. It is the malt people reach for when they want something lighter than a Speyside without giving up complexity. We keep it alongside the Yamazaki because the two together show how far one company's house style can stretch.

    Talisker Storm Single Malt Whisky

Storm carries no age statement, which lets Talisker use younger, more assertive casks. The result is ashier and more immediate than the 10, with less of the rounded middle. We stock both because they are not interchangeable. The 10 is the measured version of Skye; Storm is the same distillery with the weather up. Which one suits depends entirely on the evening.
