Why we stock it

Navy strength at 57.5%, built around ruby grapefruit, mandarin and rose geranium rather than simply turning up the juniper.

We stock it because overproof gin earns its place in cocktails - it survives ice and citrus where a 40% gin gets lost. One bottle carries about 32 standard drinks, so it goes further than the price suggests.

Karu's navy strength gin, and the bottle that put the distillery on the map: it took the trophy for best contemporary gin at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2021, against the whole category.

Built on double juniper and three tiers of citrus — herbaceous lemon myrtle, bitter ruby grapefruit and sweet mandarin — with rose geranium running underneath. Navy strength usually means heat first and flavour second; this is the other way round. Add water and the floral side opens right out. Outstanding in a negroni, where most gins simply disappear.
