Why we stock it

Suntory's Yamazaki 12 is the bottle that made the rest of the world take Japanese whisky seriously, and it still sets the reference for the style: soft, faintly fruity, with a thread of incense from the mizunara oak that nothing in Scotland quite reproduces.

We stock it because it is the clearest way to understand what Japanese single malt actually does differently, and because it rewards drinking slowly rather than analysing.

Japan's first commercial single malt, distilled at Suntory's Yamazaki distillery outside Kyoto, where three rivers meet and the humidity shapes how the spirit matures. Matured in a combination of American oak, Spanish oak and Japanese Mizunara — the last of these is what makes it unmistakably Japanese.

Soft stone fruit and coconut on the nose, ripe peach and candied orange through the palate, and a long finish where the Mizunara turns towards incense and sandalwood. Drink it neat, or over a single large block of ice; Suntory's own preference is a highball with good soda.
