Why we stock it

Perrier-Jouet's prestige cuvee, drawn entirely from Chardonnay and released only in years the house judges worth it. The hand-painted Japanese anemones on the bottle were designed by Emile Galle in 1902 and are as much a part of the wine's reputation as what is inside.

We stock it because a serious champagne list needs a top to it. Most of the shelf turns over on Moet and Veuve; this is the bottle for the anniversary, the milestone birthday and the gift where the box matters as much as the contents. One or two move a month, and their absence is noticed more than their presence.

Belle Epoque arrives in the most recognisable bottle in Champagne — the hand-painted Japanese anemones were designed by Émile Gallé in 1902. The Blanc de Blancs takes the prestige cuvée a step further: chardonnay only, from the house's finest sites.

Delicate and floral rather than powerful — white blossom, citrus zest and almond over a very fine bead, with a long chalky finish. Serve cool in a white wine glass, never a flute, and let it open. Oysters, scallops, or simply on its own.
