Why we stock it

Cristal was created for the Russian court in 1876 and is still made only in declared vintages, from Roederer's own vineyards.

We stock it because Cristal, Dom Perignon and Krug are the three names the prestige champagne shelf is judged on. Missing any one of them gets noticed.

Cristal was commissioned in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II, and it is still bottled the way he asked for it: clear glass rather than green, and a flat base instead of the usual punt. Roederer grow the fruit for it themselves, drawn from a small number of their oldest parcels, and the blend is pinot noir led with chardonnay behind it.

It is lighter on its feet than the price suggests — dry, finely strung, citrus and white orchard fruit over a chalky line, with a fine and persistent bead. Serve it cool rather than ice cold, in a white wine glass instead of a flute, and give it a few minutes in the glass. It drinks beautifully with oysters, but it will carry a whole meal.
